Orakei Marae Reflection

At the Orakei Marae I saw how a powhiri is done and I heard a Karanga. I also saw the inside of the marae. I was really amazed at the carvings that told stories about Maori chiefs from the past. I never knew that a Marae has body parts and they are the ribs, arms, spine and the heart. The head of the body is called a tekoteko. The last thing I saw was a great view of Auckland City.

On the marae I learned the All Black haka and the man who taught us the haka was Matua. The girls learned how to use poi, sticks and sing an action song. Orakei Marae was built as a national meeting house in 1970. Ngati Whatua own it now. The most important thing of our visit was the powhiri.

How I felt about my visit to the Marae? It was a great experience and learned a lot of things about Maori culture.
